Today we went to the zoo!
Johnny and I both had trouble sleeping last night, so we woke up a bit later than we wanted. We think the best way to deal with this climate is to go out and about early when it's still a little cool, and then work at home/nap during the middle of the day when it is very hot, and then go out again in the evening when it is nice.
So anyway we left late and it was hot even at 10:00 am.
I have been really ok with the weather lately and even started to feel myself acclimating to the extreme heat + humidity combo. But today not so much. So please excuse the lack of pictures, I just wasn't quite feeling it today.
The zoo is only about a 15 minute walk from our house, and it was cool to walk around an area we haven't been to yet. We walked through a lot of larger mansions (half restored to private homes or hotels, the other half abandoned and beautiful looking) and found a Super Aki close to us! We have a little Aki (a tiny grocery store) a quick walk from our home, but this Super Aki will be good to have for anything else we might need.
As we walked up to the park I saw a bunch of people in a long line across the street. I said "Johnny look at that long line I wonder what's going on" and Johnny said "think about it" and then I was like ohhhh they are voting! Today is a big election and it was nice to see so many people out voting.
The zoo has a lovely grand entrance, all pink and pretty, and there's a little fountain out front as well. It was founded in 1910 and it definitely looks old.
We walked in (it's free!) and immediately bought some water to cool off, even though the park was really shady and nice. The park was really empty but got a bit busier later on. When you first walk in, there's a a stretch of little food vendors and little trinkets for the little kids. There is also a little train that runs along the whole zoo. After you walk down the stretch, you enter the zoo! The sign says a lot of things you cannot do in the zoo, including "don't yell at the animals" and I thought "fair enough".
I had read some reviews online of the zoo and everyone said it was really sweet and a nice place to spend some time. A few people said the cages were small but the animals looked fine, and it was a bit shocking to see how very small these cages are. The animals did appear just fine, but I'm not a zoologist so I hope they are ok.
There was a bunch of animals, more than I thought this little zoo would have. You can also get very close to them, and because the cages are pretty small and with no real places for them to hide, you can see them close up which I had never experienced at a zoo before.
They had an exhibit for raccoons and for a domestic bunny which I thought was really funny.
There was a bunch of different types of deer which was also funny but also interesting because deer are just so pretty. Oh also a bunch of different monkeys. There was one monkey who was teeny tiny and he was super cute and he jumped into his little box on the wall after he ate and he stuck his little face out and made a super cute chirping/whirring noise and he was my favorite part.
We saw among many others: zebras, ostriches, mountain goats, hippos, a gorilla, lions, jaguars, a crocodile, a lot of tropical birds, and a little ground squirrel/groundhog thing that was eating the lovebirds' food. The lovebirds didn't seem too upset, they just looked at him weird. There were some plaques hung by some exhibits with information but it was only in Spanish.
Thats' all the pictures I took, I realize now I should have taken more and made a larger post about my experience.
After that we headed home, stopping at a store to buy some delicious cold drinks to sip on the rest of the way home. Then I worked and Johnny wrote and then we went to the main park but nothing was going on because of the election, I think. So we went to a little pizza place and had pizza!
I hate the idea that I am coming off as a bit negative in these posts. I should be so grateful of my experiences and I really am, I am just a moody person by nature and that translates to everything I do even if it's corresponding with me living a dream I had.
But, I learned today to take more pictures because it makes me really happy to write these.
Hasta luego!
