Buenos tardes!
That's what you say instead of hola. You can say "hola" but everyone says "buenos dias" or "buenos tardes" or "buenos noches" or they say a lot of other things but I don't know what they are saying because I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH.
I said "hola" to a guy walking by the front door (he is the airbnb host's friend, the airbnb we are in is like a cute little compound of several small apartments with a cute courtyard and the host lives in the middle) and he said "que tal" and smiled and I just smiled because I know that means "what's up" (I think) and I don't know what you are supposed to say back in Spanish. And then I ran inside and hid.
MEXICO IS GOING GREAT.
I know I'm whining, it's just hard to not focus on feeling so alienated! I know it will get better, just bear with me.
Not much to report today, Johnny and I worked on setting up my freelance editing business chelseamburk.com and perfecting the facebook and website. Then I did some editing. Then it started raining and it was late in the day so we decided to stay in and save money. But to stay in and save money you have to run to the Oxxo (like a mini Walgreens except it more resembles a Circle K without the gas) and get a 12 pack of Dos Equis (because they don't sell 6 packs but it's ok either way because a 12 pack is less than the price of a US 6 pack). But it was raining so I took my umbrella and then a car honked at me because the umbrella was sticking out into the road and the roads and sidewalks are so narrow this is actually a problem, so I moved the umbrella but cars kept honking for some reason so Johnny said they were making fun of my umbrella so I put it away because I felt dumb but then Johnny said he was just kidding but by then it stopped raining.
NOW FOR POSITIVES
My dear friend Sarah who speaks Spanish and has lived in Mexico has been asking me all about what little things I've loved so far so I want to put that list here so you all don't think I'm just sitting inside crying all day long:
- Limes taste amazing here
- People walking down the narrow streets always move aside politely (we do too) but it's just so polite every time
- Everyone helps everyone back up their cars into the street because it's chaos and you need a buddy sometimes
- There are a bunch of beautiful parks BUT there is zero grass in them!! It's so weird! There are beautiful trees and statues and free wifi and it's super clean but the little patches of grass where the trees are are gated off!
- There is an older fellow that comes to the compound every single day and he just sweeps the outside patio all day long and his name is Martin but he doesn't speak English but he is super nice and he has blue eyes. But seriously all he does is sweep. Just all day long. Why does he sweep all day? I don't know.
Johnny and I also finally saw dogs on a roof! My friend Sarah said it's a thing in Mexico because they use dogs as alarms so they just pop them up on the roof to hang out and bark. We were walking Faye this morning and there were 2 white and black terrier-like mutts barking away on a roof. Faye was so confused! I told her if she was bad I would put her up on the roof.
Oh yesterday we saw a Xolocuintli! A lady and her son were walking him to the park. He is one of 2 dogs I have seen on a leash being walked anywhere in the 6 days I have been here. He was so cute.
Oh the airbnb host has 5 dogs he takes out every morning but I have no idea where he takes them. We walk Faye just around the block and then to the only grass we have seen in this radius which is like 10 feet of grass in front of an abandoned mini strip mall.
The absence of dogs here and the weirdness I feel walking Faye has been hard to get past so far.
Lastly, we found a place to live! It was a bit over our budget but only by a bit and it is SO PERFECT that I don't mind at all. I will post pictures on Monday after we sign the paperwork because I don't want to jinx it.
Finally, here is a picture of Mexico Faye sleeping on her toy.
Should I make Faye an Instagram called Mexico Faye? Probably.
Lo siento if this was a bummer! Hasta luego!
