Hola amigos!
I am on DAY FIVE of living in Mexico and I will be honest I am pretty stressed these days!
You think it will be like living in a vacation and then you realize you need to make money and that you are spending a lot of money and that you haven't found a place yet and that everyone looks at you a bit oddly and you don't even feel comfortable walking your dog, not that you feel unsafe at all but everyone is like why the fuck are they walking their dog except they are thinking it in Spanish.
I mean, I don't feel like anyone is even looking at Johnny and I, even though we of course stand out as not locals. My impression has been that everyone politely ignores us. It's so strange to live your whole life feeling like you never stand out as out of place or anything and then to become a foreigner in a foreign land it's like woosh.
It's been hard communicating with Johnny as well. We are both stressed and adjusting and it is natural to feel this way, but we are so naturally always aware of each other and communicative it is hard to give each other space and help each other not feel stressed when we both need space and are both stressed!
Anyway we are breaking up. Just kidding we are fine.
ENOUGH WHINING CHELSEA!
Ok so yesterday we looked for houses for an hour and found nothing and I emailed like 5 real estate agents and got stressed and cried and felt dumb for moving all this way and Johnny consoled me and then we walked 10 minutes north towards the city center and stopped at the parque de Santa Ana and got hotdogs from a street vendor. This cheered me up enormously.
This is a statue in the park. It is of a guy named Quintana Roo. Couldn't get close enough to read the plaque. The parks are funny here because they have zero grass. Just a pretty plaza with trees and benches.
This is the Santa Ana church. Just beautiful. The parks are usually right next to the church and are named after the church. The neighborhoods around the church and park and then named after the church as well, so we were in the Santa Ana neighborhood.
This is a cute mama dog that was hanging out at the park. The dog culture here is strange, lots of people have them but they are never really seen. Also, a lot of people own dogs but let them roam. This dog looked pretty healthy and seemed like she had just had puppies. She had no collar and was pretty skittish so maybe she was just a really successful stray. No one knows. I gave her the last of my hotdog, that's why she is sitting and staring at me in this picture. Johnny said Chelsea you can't do that, now she will follow us, and he was right. But he only followed a little bit. And I don't feel bad. I'll feed all the stray dogs all my leftover hotdogs. It wasn't even leftover, I saved it for her on purpose.
These are pretty old mansions on the walk home. The top one I think someone lives in, the bottom one no one has lived in for a very long time. While I was taking this picture a guy walking on the other side of the street stopped so that he wouldn't get in the way of the picture. It was very nice of him.
And this is me at the Merida English Library today. There are so many expats here that they made themselves a library. It was super nice and the older American gentleman at the front desk was very helpful when I asked if he knew of any places to live. Well, he said to do all the things we are already doing but he was trying to help. They had great books here, but you have to pay 400 MX per person to join for a year, which is 20 bucks. We will go later and get a membership, it just feels strange to pay for a library. I mean, it's run by volunteers and it's a non profit so it makes sense.
I read a book about the "Golden Age" of children's book illustrators. So that was good.
Then we walked home both grumpy at each other for no reason because when you move to another country with nothing but moxy and measly savings YOU GET GRUMPY SOMETIMES.
Ok going to do some freelance and make some money! More pictures tomorrow! Don't know what we're going to do but there will be pictures of it!
