We made it to Merida! Johnny got here first with Faye and his cousin (Faye for forever, Ethan just for the drive). I flew in a few days later and here we are in tropical, humid, lively, damp, lovely Merida!
I have learned a few things:
- you pay for your parking at the Merida airport inside the airport
- the Walmart here has a walking escalator at an angle so you can get your cart down to the underground parking. The walkway is also magnetized so your cart sticks to it
- La Negrita closes at 10 pm NO IF ANDS OR BUTS
- It's hard to find a house. So far
- Everyone is super nice!
- Driving in the city is scary! Well, being a passenger is scary. I haven't driven yet
- "Amueblado" means "furnished"
Our place doesn't have a/c but we learned it's ok, we just picked up a fan.The bathroom situation is quite an adjustment - no water pressure, no hot water, shower takes overnight to drain. Don't get me started on how you cannot flush the toilet paper. But it's ok. We will live. It's been interesting to think how spoiled we are and how we take for granted a lot of things that really aren't the norm in other countries.
I have an interview for a foreign teacher program at a private bilingual school on Monday! I may have another interview on Tuesday, I am waiting to hear back. I have been able to work on some freelance editing, but I am still feeling off and tired from travel and, you know, MOVING TO A NEW COUNTRY FOR SOME REASON. I will try to be better and more motivated. Bought a yoga mat at Walmart, gonna start working on some peace of mind to go along with not being a lazy bum and wasting all savings and having to leave and go back home before the 6 months are up. I SAID I WILL TRY.
Here are pictures! There are barely any! I realize how much I depend on ephemeral instagram stories and will do better to take pictures (including some of the hundreds of gorgeous crumbling mansions completely overgrown and untouched for 100+ years) so stay tuned!
Here is the pretty view down Paseo de Montejo where a lot of huge mansions are and is a very pricey area.
Here we are walking to pick up the laundry.
Here is my baby hair curling from the humidity.
Here is Johnny walking Faye!
